Where on earth are you?

In Wales. Three hours from London, an hour from Chester and Shrewsbury. Allow an hour and a half from Liverpool and Manchester. Birmingham? Less than two hours.

The drive is magnificently scenic, and if you’re coming by helicopter, the views are an experience.

No, we’ll ask you when you arrive.

When is… ?

Says Major Staggs: ‘I remember the days when the hotel restaurant had a big gong outside. On the stroke of 7pm, the noise of the J Arthur Rank opening credits reverberated through the building, calling residents to dine. Get there at 8pm? Too late. Ah, those were the days.’

The gong's still here as a memento of former glories...

If you must. Direct dial phones, and most have free WIFI internet access and a desk.

What’s the weather like?

Usually wonderful. The hotel is on the east side of the Lake, sheltered by the mountains, so the weather we experience is frequently much better than any pessimistic forecasts suggest.

Now you’re going to ask, does it rain. An optimist would say that sometimes we have a very heavy mist showing itself as precipitation, that lasts a couple of days… but not often. Curiously, in this mountain microclimate, the far end of the lake gets more rainfall than we do. Funny old world.

Rain? In Wales? Yes, it can happen. But with our relaxing bar, drawing room, tavern and restaurant, just sit back and enjoy. The changing face of the lake is better than telly. Each to his own, a good book does it for us.

Mountainscape? So you get cut off by snow?

Yes. But it’s happened only once since 1947.

How’s the fishing

Classic fly fishing for wild and stocked brown trout. Glorious, and the lake has only ten boats!

Tell me a story

Here’s a true one: a businessman on his way to Liverpool by helicopter was made to divert via our hotel. This was because his wife had instructed him not to return without two jars of chef’s home-made marmalade.
